Balcones Merges with SMR, Unveils New Branding

The year 2023 has been a busy one for Balcones Resources. The company merged with Sims Municipal Recycling (SMR) under the name “Balcones Recycling”, becoming one of the largest privately held recycling companies in the country. Now Balcones is launching a new website and new branding to match the transformative year..

The Balcones Recycling footprint expanded to fourteen (14) county and municipal contracts, including the City of New York, City of Austin, City of Phoenix, and City of San Antonio – serving more than 13 million people and processing more than 1 million tons of recyclables each year. The company’s mission remains to recover all recyclables from the waste stream by providing custom recycling programs and fostering partnerships with small-to-large businesses, counties, and municipalities. Tom Outerbridge serves as CEO and Adam Vehik as President.

“Our companies come from different roots: one public, one private. One born in Texas, and one in New York and New Jersey” said Outerbridge. “But we have both always been dedicated pure-play recyclers. Most importantly, we have grown what will now be one team of the most experienced and dedicated professionals in the industry.”

A brief history

Closed Loop Partners acquired Balcones Resources in 2019 and SMR in 2022. In November 2022, Closed Loop Partners created Circular Services as a holding company for Balcones and SMR, along with HomeBiogas and Retriever. With Balcones and SMR functioning as the two recycling entities within Circular Services, joining forces was an easy decision.Balcones Resources and SMR take pride in their award-winning operational expertise and strict focus on recycling services, making alignment on mission and values a very simple exercise.

New look, same operations

Although Balcones is excited to kick off a new era with a new logo, brand colors and website, everything else remains unchanged. The biggest impact to the company’s partners will be access to a larger group of experts when creating and delivering custom recycling programs. The company is also unveiling a new website under the domain balconesrecycling.com, which includes information about all Balcones’ locations and their corresponding services.

“We are excited to re-introduce ourselves with our new image and expanded team of experts,” said Adam Vehik. “We have a unique opportunity to amplify our impact across the country without changing the way we operate. Our partners can expect the same personalized approach we are known for, except now there’s a larger leadership team to confer and provide custom recycling solutions.”
