In October of 2021, then operating as SMR, Balcones became the operator of the Lee County, Florida Material Recovery Facility (MRF). With a processing capacity of 30 tons-per-hour, the recycling \facility processes 7 to 8K tons of residential single-stream each month and employs approximately 100 workers. Our operations serve the approximately 825K residents of Lee County as well as local businesses.
Sarasota, FL
The Balcones Sarasota Material Recovery Facility (MRF) opened in 2019 as Single Stream Recyclers, Florida’s first artificial intelligence- (AI-) powered recycling facility. Balcones acquired Single Stream Recyclers in 2020. The MRF has a 50-ton-per-hour capacity and processes approximately 10K tons of material each month. Balcones services Sarasota County and other surrounding municipalities’ residential single stream, and processes commercial single stream.
West Palm Beach, FL
In October of 2019, Balcones Recycling, became the operator of the Palm Beach County, Florida Material Recovery Facility (MRF). The dual stream recycling facility is owned by the Solid Waste Authority (SWA) of Palm Beach County and processes 8 to 9K tons per month.

The Sunset Park Material Recovery Facility (MRF) is the largest and most sophisticated plant for commingled residential recyclables in North America. Originally built and operated by SMR, the recycling facility opened in December 2013 and processes most of New York City’s curbside material, roughly 20k tons per month.
Rockland, NY
In April of 2023, SMR, now operating as Balcones Recycling, became the operator of the Rockland County, NY Material Recovery Facility (MRF). Less than a couple of hours away from the Brooklyn MRF, the dual stream recycling facility is owned by Rockland County (also known as Rockland Green) and processes 3K tons of residential and commercial material per month.

Austin, TX
The Austin Material Recovery Facility (MRF) is Balcones’ original flagship location. Balcones opened the recycling facility in 2012 after winning part of the City of Austin’s residential recycling contract, effectively kickstarting our residential single stream program. The system has a processing capacity of 25 tons-per-hour and recovers between 11K and 15K tons of both commercial and residential recyclables each month.
San Antonio, TX
Our San Antonio MRF is our most innovative facility to date. Equipped with a 50 ton-per-hour system, this recycling facility is the first with a fully-automated container line, making it the most automated facility in the country.
Taylor, TX
Just a few minutes north of Austin, the Taylor Material Recovery Facility (MRF) supports the recycling needs of the cities of Temple, Leander and Hutto, and surrounding communities. The Balcones Taylor recycling facility has a processing capacity of 15 tons-per-hour and recovers both commercial and residential single-stream material.
Dallas, TX
The Balcones Dallas MRF opened its doors in 1995. Located in Farmers Branch, the facility focuses on commercial and post-industrial paper, metal, and plastics processing and marketing. Along with the Austin location, it pioneered single stream recycling in Texas with the “Everything that TearsTM” program.
